24th February 26

Kensington Wade welcomed the Year of the Fire Horse with our most vibrant Chinese New Year celebration yet, bringing together pupils, staff and families to honour this important festival in Chinese culture.
A highlight of the morning was the traditional Lion Dance, a dazzling performance symbolising good luck, courage and prosperity. In a special moment for the school, Ben Coleman MP joined us to dot the eye of the lion, an auspicious ritual believed to awaken the lion and bring blessings for the year ahead. The dancers’ energy and storytelling brought the playground to life, and pupils were captivated by the spectacle.
We were also delighted to welcome internationally acclaimed percussionist Beibei Wang, who gave an electrifying performance followed by interactive workshops. Wang, who has performed as a soloist with leading orchestras including the BBC Symphony Orchestra, introduced pupils to traditional Chinese percussion and the rhythms associated with Lunar New Year festivities.
Reflecting on the celebration, Head of Kensington Wade Huw May said:
“Our Chinese New Year celebrations have once again captivated our children and our whole community. The pupils were thrilled by the Lion Dance and enjoyed exploring calligraphy, dumpling‑making and other cultural activities.Chinese New Year is especially meaningful for us at Kensington Wade because it brings together everything the children have learned throughout the year and allows us to celebrate one of the most significant festivals in Chinese culture.”
The day beautifully showcased our bilingual ethos, giving pupils the chance to immerse themselves in authentic traditions, language and arts while deepening their understanding of China’s rich cultural heritage in this special Year of the Fire Horse.”
